Critics have accused Premier League football clubs of exploiting loyal fans after it was revealed that hundreds of millions of pounds are being earned every season but buyers are paying a premium for favourite merch
We can reveal that the 20 top-flight clubs negotiated a combined record sum, which includes £535.7million from deals with kit suppliers such as Adidas and Nike .
It emerges after we revealed last week that Premier League clubs have also smashed the £500m barrier on sponsorship for the first time after negotiating deals worth a total £533.75million. This season’s front-of-shirt deals are collectively worth £422.5m, with a further £111.25m generated from sleeve deals.
Experts believe Premier League kit and sponsorship deals increased by around £100m this season. But despite this, the cost of kids’ replica shirts continues to rise. Clubs point out manufacturers are responsible for setting them – but consumer expert Scott Dixon said families will find the situation “galling”.
