The Premier League is to require clubs under scrutiny to submit accounts three months early

After charging Everton with alleged breaches of its profit and sustainability rules last season, the Premier League has introduced new rules that require clubs under scrutiny to submit accounts early.

Everton robustly defended themselves against the allegations, maintaining that they have remained compliant with the Premier League and its P&S regulations, with the club having long been in dialogue over their financial affairs due to the heavy losses that have been sustained at the football club in recent seasons. Cumulatively over the last five financial years, the Toffees have lost more than £430m.

A number of clubs including Southampton, Leicester City, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, and Burnley wrote to the Premier League in the wake of Everton’s charges, arguing that they should be entitled to compensation should the club be found guilty of breaches. The argument from clubs that complained to the Premier League was that by failing to resolve the issue swiftly it allowed for Everton, if found guilty, to escape a points deduction that would have consigned them to relegation instead of one of their rivals.
