President Michael D Higgins has denied suggestions that he accused the Israeli Embassy of “leaking” his letter to the Iranian President. He stated that he knows how the letter became public but it is for journalists to find out.

One journalist then asked Mr Higgins if he had “suspicions about it leaking out”. Mr Higgins asked him to repeat the question and the journalist then stated that the President had “alluded to some suspicions about how the letter became public”. “The exchange of letters upon the coming to office of a new Head of State is standard diplomatic practice for countries which share diplomatic relations,” the spokesman said.
