President Joe Biden on Monday opened an application website for widespread student loan forgiveness, officially beginning the long-awaited process for millions of Americans with debt.

The launch follows a brief test period over the weekend, which garnered 8 million submissions to the U.S. Department of Education, Biden said.
Biden's student loan forgiveness plan was announced this summer during a multiple-year pause on student loan repayments. Up to $10,000 in student loan debt can be canceled for people making less than $125,000 per year or as much as $20,000 for people who received Pell Grants for low income students.People who applied for forgiveness during the beta period do not need to reapply through the official site. There was no advantage to applying before the formal launch.
