Fans travel the length of the country to see them, they’ve graced the cover of the national press, hung out with Mark E Smith, and were the last band to headline The Guild Hall. After a brief hiatus, Evil Blizzard are back! The band’s fourth studio album, Rotting in the Belly of the Whale, has already been described in the music press as their ‘most furious, compelling and diverse album to date.’ To celebrate, the cult band is holding an album launch party at Preston’s Blitz.
Filthy Dirty has swapped his bass for a guitar and the band brought Mr Dibs, of Hawkwind fame, in on bass, creating a new sound, as Stoko outlines: “Kav decided he didn’t want to continue with the band and coincidentally Dibs, aka Fleshcrawl, had just left Hawkwind and had joined Blizzard, so that definitely changed our sound slightly.
“Of course, we would be the best headliner of any festival. 100,000 people singing ‘Are You Evil?’ would be better than what most of the bands that frequent the big stages around the world offer.” “Myself and my brother decided to set up our own label, which has been brilliant,” he says. “We’ve gone on to release other bands such as HotWax, TV Face, Hauspoints, Chum, Michael, Krom from Sweden and even a single with King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.”“It’s brilliant,” says Stoko. “There was a period about 10 to 15 years ago where there was loads going on, but then it all seemed to dry up.
“We’ve had our moments of debauchery,” says Stoko. “But there’s nothing more tedious than bands talking about how wasted they got – he says trying not to incriminate himself. However, there’s been some marvellous moments. For me personally playing with CJ Ramone was a buzz as a lifelong Ramones’ obsessive. We’re all big Killing Joke fans, so seeing their drummer wearing one of our t-shirts was a good one.
Some of the fans dress up, as Mark explains: “There are plenty of Bliddiots such as The Pink Poodle, Len, The White Rabbit and The Cardinal. Many just come along in whatever leftover fancy dress they can find in a skip I think!”“We’ve got Hauspoints supporting,” says Stoko. “They’re pretty new and really, really good. If Television, The Fall, and Can formed a band and lived in Chorley, that’s how they’d sound.
