Valentine's Day falling on a Friday this year means many couples will be enjoying a romantic and intimate weekend. However, increased sexual activity can also lead to a rise in urinary tract infections (UTIs). Dr. Masarat Jilani, a GP with bladder health company Jude, shares essential advice to help couples prevent UTIs from dampening their romantic plans.

With Valentine's Day falling on a Friday this year, many couples will be planning a romantic and intimate weekend. However, with increased sexual activity, there is an unfortunate increase in urinary tract infections (UTIs) – they don't call it the honeymoon disease for nothing. Dr. Masarat Jilani , a GP with bladder health company Jude, shares below her essential advice to help prevent UTIs from ruining your romantic weekend. \Staying hydrated is crucial.

Drinking plenty of water helps flush bacteria through the urinary tract before it can cause problems. You should aim for at least 6-8 glasses of water daily, especially if you’re spending the weekend away somewhere tropical or indulging in champagne. Also listen to your body and drink when you feel thirsty or when you notice your urine appears darker. \Don't get into the habit of holding it in; make sure that you are urinating regularly. One of the most important things to remember is to go to the bathroom soon after intercourse. This will ensure that you clear any bacteria that may have entered the urethra during sex. While you may want to maintain an air of mystery and spontaneity, remember when you head off to slip into something more comfortable to give yourself a wash downstairs. Stick to plain water or a mild and unscented soap – do not be tempted to use perfume down there. A shared shower after sex can ensure hygiene doesn’t interrupt the romance. \If using lubricant (which can be a good idea), choose a water-based, fragrance-free formula. Flavored lubricants may sound fun, but they are far more likely to lead to both UTIs and thrush, which is less fun. Avoid spermicide-coated contraceptives if you’re prone to UTIs, as spermicide can disrupt the balance of good bacteria in the vaginal and urinary tract, making infections more likely. Discuss alternative contraceptive methods with your doctor. While it can be disheartening to have to interrupt a date or weekend away to seek medical help, untreated UTIs can lead to worsening symptoms and more serious complications. If you notice the telltale burning sensation when urinating, as well as cloudy or strong-smelling urine and lower abdominal discomfort, seek medical advice as you may well need antibiotics. \Dr. Jilani says: “There are plenty of reasons to look forward to a long weekend of lovemaking with a partner, but some women may find they are simultaneously dreading the added risk of UTIs. While there is nothing that can act as a complete guarantee, there are a few simple precautions that can help keep your bladder healthy and infection-free. Even if you’re prone to UTIs, taking these steps can still make a real difference.
