Savings from the scrapping of the northern leg of HS2 will be reinvested, Rishi Sunak announced
The scrapping of the northern leg of HS2 could lead to an extension of Nottingham's tram network. Rishi Sunak announced last week that billions will be spent on new transport projects by redirecting the HS2 savings - £36 billion - to hundreds of new transport projects across the country.
The second phase of HS2 from Birmingham to Manchester, which would have included East Midlands Parkway, was cancelled as the project’s costs had “more than doubled”, Rishi Sunak told the Conservative Party conference on October 4. But Prime Minister Mr Sunak announced that the savings would be reinvested in hundreds of projects - including Nottingham's tram network.
The Department for Transport has confirmed that the Midlands region will receive £9.6 billion of the HS2 savings towards transport projects. The East Midlands will benefit from a £1.75 billion regional rail hub benefiting more than 50 stations in a major funding boost to create stronger public transport networks, the government has proposed.
The new Combined Authority could use the funding to extend the Nottingham Tram system to serve Gedling and connect Derby to East Midlands Parkway with a Bus Rapid Transit System, officials said.
