Before their marriage, Kate Middleton and Prince William spent Christmas apart according to Royal tradition. However, they planned a New Year's celebration together in 2006. Their relationship faced challenges, including a brief breakup in 2007, but ultimately they reunited and went on to marry in 2011.
The Prince and Princess of Wales are familiar faces at the Royal Family's Christmas Day church visit. However, before their marriage, Royal tradition dictated they spend the holiday apart at Sandringham. In 2006, after years of dating since their St Andrews University days, they planned a New Year's celebration together despite being apart on Christmas.
According to Royal author Katie Nicholl's book, 'The Making of a Royal Romance', published in 2011, Kate was left in tears when William cancelled last-minute. He had promised to join her family but opted to stay with his own, informing her by phone on Boxing Day. Nicholl writes: 'William had been having second thoughts and sat down with his father and his grandmother to have a frank discussion about his future with Kate. Both advised him not to hurry into anything.' Shortly after, in 2007, Kate and William briefly parted ways, with sources claiming the late Queen was disappointed by their breakup. However, the break up didn't last long as William and Kate were spotted sharing a kiss at an army party in Bovington, Dorset shortly after. In July 2007, Kate and her brother James attended the Concert for Diana at Wembley, marking 10 years since the death of Princess Diana, William's mother, reports the Mirror. It wasn't long before it was confirmed that their romance was back on track, with Kate moving into William's Clarence House flat. Here, he would return from military duties for cosy weekends together - and as they say, the rest is history. The couple announced their engagement in 2010 and tied the knot in April 2011. They've been happily married for nearly 14 years now and are proud parents to three children - Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis
