The head of the Met Police has disclosed that officers are investigating whether prison guards helped Daniel Khalife to escape from Wandsworth prison. The focus of the search today is on a park in southwest London - close to a flat owned by the terror suspect's family.
Following on from comments made by a Met commander that Khalife's escape was"testament to his ingenuity", here is a visualisation of the route he travelled.
It was last inspected in June last year, when living conditions for prisoners were found to be"very poor". Inspectors described"large amounts of rubbish in exercise yards attracting vermin". Piles of litter were also seen on wings and"thrown from cell windows".Lack of sightings 'testament to fugitive's ingenuity' - Met commander
"He was a trained soldier - so ultimately he has skills that perhaps some sections of the public don't have." "One of the possibilities for escape is a hostage situation and knives play into that kind of situation," Lord Carlisle said. Khalife escaped dressed as a chef on Wednesday morning at around 7.30am, strapped to the bottom of a food lorry;
Sir Mark Rowley said"bits of intelligence" have led to police activity in forces"around the country", meaning there are more police involved than the 150 counterterrorism officers previously confirmed to be engaged in the manhunt.
