Prison nurse who handled £13k of gang's dirty cash handed one year ban

A nurse has been suspended for 12 months over her role helping the leader of a criminal gang which made £240,000 selling goods stolen from prison.

Bligh was working at HMP Forest Bank in Salford when police launched an investigation into staff members who were stealing electronic goods. This included items such as CDs, DVDs, games consoles and accessories delivered into the Prison as a part of a legitimate prison industries contract where the goods would be repackaged and sent out to retailers.

Bligh pleaded not guilty but was convicted after a trial and handed a nine month sentence suspended for a year. When interviewed by the NMC misconduct panel, she denied being a dishonest person but admitted she turned a "blind eye" to the wrongdoing. Representing Bligh, Mr Buxton reminded the panel that it was never suggested as part of the criminal prosecution that she was actively involved, in the sense of conspiring to launder proceeds of those thefts. Furthermore, Mr Buxton submitted that the amount of money that was deposited her your savings account was comparatively small.
