The FFG political bloc's rise to power through a power-sharing agreement, leading to nearly 19 years of continuous governance, raises questions about the health of democracy in Ireland.
Our system of PR is praised for promoting consensus and civility. However, it can lead to entropy, gradually causing uncertainty and disorder. The FFG political bloc, which opponents mockingly refer to as such, secured 43% of the popular vote and 49% of the parliamentary seats. Although the two parties that form FFG have lost their duopoly, they managed to create a new one through a power-sharing agreement that started in 2016 and has been in place since then.
Transfers of votes between the parties at each election have led to a seat bonus, mostly benefiting Fianna Fáil. The upcoming government is expected to be an FFG coalition, supported by Independents. If this government completes its term, Fine Gael will have been in power for almost 19 years, breaking the record previously held by Fianna Fáil administrations. However, the question arises whether such prolonged governance is healthy for democracy
