A tenants union has accused the Government of failing to help tenants fearing eviction
A Liverpool renters union has claimed tenants are “devastated” after a proposal to ban no-fault evictions was delayed by the Government.
It was included in the party’s manifesto later this year under Boris Johnson, and then became part of the Renter’s Reform Bill which promised further changes to the system. After several days, the bill was put forward by the Government yesterday as part of the King’s Speech. The Government has labelled these changes as a “once in a generation overhaul of housing laws”. Though it has welcomed the news that the bill is going ahead, the Liverpool branch of ACORN, which represents tenants in disputes with landlords, argued the delay to ending Section 21 had been “kicked into the long grass”.
“If the Government is serious about providing security for renters, we call on them to fulfil its commitment to abolish Section 21 notices as a matter of urgency.” "It was ironic because we had been reporting issues with damp and mould for a long time and they said to fix these issues they would have to increase the rent, which we didn't think was fair. Then one day we got the eviction notice.
Commenting on the bill, the National Residential Landlords Association welcomed Government promises on possession grounds and court reform, but said more detail is needed about replacement for Section 21.
