Iranian expatriates gathered in LaCenterra in Katy dressed in full 'Handmaid's Tale' costumes to protest violence against women in Iran.
“We’re wearing these costumes because the women of that series went through exactly what the women in our country are going through,” Jamie said. “The government is calling for raping women — some even as young as 10 — because their hair slipped out of their hijab, or they were in the street.”
Shapandi said the protesters don’t have a problem with hijabs. The issue, she said, is that women are being forced to wear them and are punished if they don’t. “A hijab is supposed to be a choice,” she said. “It can’t be a choice if you die for not wearing one.” One of the protesters who spoke on the condition of anonymity added: “You cannot have a dog, you cannot dance, you cannot kiss or hug your loved ones in public. Everything is forbidden, and if you do it, they’re going to take you away from your family, they rape you, they torture you and then they kill you at the end of it all. And then they won’t even return your body to your family.”
Another anonymous protester said her 65-year-old mother still lives in Iran, and she fears for her safety as much as she does the young Iranian protesters. “If her scarf slips down in the street she will be shot,” the woman said. When asked why she did not want her name used, the protester said: “ would kill my mother if they knew I was protesting — even here in America.”“This is a women’s revolution.
