Well that didn’t last long. When Kylian Mbappe signed his contract renewal with PSG in the summer, this non-transfer became one of the transfer stories of the summer because of the long-held assumption that he would end up signing for Real Madrid.
Their Champions League campaign thus far has admittedly not exactly been stunning, but with two wins and two draws from they should qualify for the knockout stages of the competition without too much difficulty. and other members of staff online also doing the rounds, it’s not easy to feel too much sympathy for his gilded employers either.
But the rapid pace at which this relationship has fallen apart also raises questions regarding the competence of those running PSG. After all, they were also a party to the negotiations that have ultimately led to this situation, and it seems equally reasonable to ask whether they had eyes bigger than their stomach and made a bunch of promises to him that they couldn’t ever keep, or whether they even had any intention of keeping them.
And all of this raises one further question that’s even more tantalising than usual because of the amounts of money at stake: what happens next? The obvious answer would be that PSG should offload Mbappe and use the money to actually try to build a team rather than merely a collection of crown-wearing individuals, all with their own egos and agendas.
When a player of Mbappe’s ability becomes unexpectedly available in the way that he has, the temptation to just get his signature on a piece of paper and then worry about what happens next later is obviously tempting.
