The bomb squad was called after a suspicious package was found near Upper Church Lane
Fears that a suspicious package in Portadown could be an explosive caused residents to be evacuated and whole roads closed off on Tuesday night, as the bomb squad were called in to assess the object.
Hours later, near 3am, police issued a statement confirming that the bomb threat was a "hoax" and that roads had re-opened. Residents in the area near the Seagoe Hotel area of Portadown were also finally allowed back into their homes. At the time of the incident, Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhartt told affected residents: “Council facilities are open for residents who have been inconvenienced. Hotel staff have been spoken to and the hotel has not been evacuated at this time.
Inspector Connolly said in a 3am update: "Police received a report shortly after 8.45pm that a suspicious object had been found at premises in the Upper Church Lane area of the town. "All cordons have since been lifted, with roads in the area re-opened, and residents are now returning to their homes. We understand the disruption this incident caused, to road users and the public, and I want to thank everyone impacted for their patience and co-operation during this time.
