Police in Northern Ireland have been granted a 36-hour extension to question a 23-year-old suspect arrested in connection with the murder of Quaham Babatunde in Dublin. Babatunde, a 34-year-old asylum seeker, was stabbed near Grafton Street in the early hours of Saturday. A second man was also injured in the attack. The suspect, arrested in Belfast before he could board a ferry to Liverpool, appeared at Lisburn Magistrates Court via video link. Detectives are using the extra time to gather further evidence, obtain witness statements, and conduct further interviews with the suspect.

PSNI detectives investigating an attack in Dublin have been granted an extra 36 hours to question a man suspected of murder.

According to reports at the weekend, a man suspected of his murder was arrested in Belfast on Sunday as he was about to board a ferry to Liverpool. On Tuesday, the 23-year-old appeared at Lisburn Magistrates Court by videolink from police custody as a Detective Inspector applied for his lawful detention to be extended for 36 hours.

She told the court that if the 36 hours were granted, investigators intended to use the time to gather further evidence, to obtain witness statements and to conduct further interviews with the 23-year-old murder suspect, where the evidence will be put to him. Granting the police application, Judge Watters said it was her view that “the fact it’s a murder that happened in the Republic actually makes it just that little bit stronger and accordingly, the 36 hours was marked as granted from 11.12 on Tuesday, 18 February".
