Public call for workplaces to support Government's 'stay at home if ill' message. Do you think more should be done to enable people to follow the guidance? Join the conversation

The public are calling for workplaces to support new advice issued by the Government to ease pressure on the NHS, as hospitals battle a surge in Covid, flu and Strep-A cases.

The UK Health Security Agency issued the advice as hospitals struggle under the pressure caused by the surge in illnesses. It prompted Dr Tim Cooksley, president of the Society for Acute Medicine, to say that the situation was "much worse than we experienced under the Covid pandemic at its peak". LancsLive readers reacted to the news by saying it was not as easy as asking people to stay at home when ill, especially when they deal with unsupportive employers. Those who are self-employed also face difficulties, they said. One reader said: "Work places do not help, refusing us to work from home, so ability to earn whilst unwell to try and stop it spreading is no longer available. Force work places to do this so we can earn, then we can stay home.

Another reader said they feared disciplinary action for staying at home while unwell. They wrote: "Yeah... Don't come to work if you're sick.. also you spent too much time being sick so here's your written warning.. anymore time off sick and we will let you go." One person questioned why extra facilities weren't being opened to help cope with the pressures. They said: "Why can't they open nightingale hospitals? They found the resources for Covid so why not now?"Let us know in the comments. LancsLive will be there to join the conversation with you.
