A survey has revealed major public support for the move

The idea is being considered by the government after a survey revealed major public support for the same. Further 84% said they should have an option to use their PSC as proof of ID when it came to a non-government body, research from the Department of Social Protection revealed.

A source close to Social Protection Minister Regina Doherty said the minister is seriously considering an amendment to the law to allow people to use their PSC as a legal ID, the Irish Daily Mirror reports. They added: “If people want to use the PSC as a form of ID, then they should be able to. Obviously, it would be entirely voluntary.”

They also said that people without a driving licence have no other form of legal ID apart from their passport which most are hesitant to carry around with them. Our Irish Mirror Sports Page - which brings you all your Irish and UK sports news - can be found here. The Irish Mirror Twitter account is @IrishMirror while our sports page is @MirrorSportIE.
