Public Trust in Garda Plummets Amid Rising Crime Experiences
Garda, Crime, Public Perception

The CSO's latest crime survey reveals a sharp disconnect between public perception and reported crime statistics. The number of people personally affected by crime has increased significantly, but the reporting rate has collapsed. This suggests a deep-seated lack of confidence in the Garda's ability to handle these crimes, leading to a significant under-reporting of criminal activity in Ireland.

The Central Statistics Office's household survey on public perception s and experiences of crime has revealed a concerning trend in Ireland. While overall crime reporting rates decreased slightly compared to 2019, the number of people reporting personal experiences of theft, fraud, and assault has nearly doubled.

The survey indicates that fewer than half of all household crimes and a mere 30% of personal crimes are being reported to the Garda. The public's trust in the Garda's ability to effectively combat crime has dropped significantly, with less than half believing the force is effective at a national level.

This loss of confidence appears to be driving the low reporting rates, as many individuals feel the incidents are too minor or that the Garda would not take appropriate action
