Top universities were 'more conservative' with offers and clearing places after a bumper year for admissions in 2021

A-level pupils are less likely to get into top universities through clearing this year, experts have warned, amid a surge in demand and restriction of slots.– but the number of clearing places remained roughly the same at around 27,000.first time since the pandemic began that students have been assessed via exams.

“The top universities – the Russell Group universities if you like – tend to be overwhelmed with applicants and this year it is particularly severe because there were the people that got good grades during Covid and have postponed entry waiting for the universities to get back to a kind of normality.”

“We used to talk in higher education about it being a buyer’s market, where students have a lot of power. But for all sorts of reasons, it’s become more of a market stacked in favour of the universities where they can afford to be more selective again,” he added.
