Investigators determined the fire was caused by careless disposal of smoking materials. Damage was estimated at $100,000.
Firefighters were called to a home in the 400 block of Avenue I North around 4:30 a.m., a fire department media release said.
They arrived to find smoke and flames pouring out of the home. Four people who had been inside managed to get out safely and take shelter from the cold in a vehicle. Crews began spraying water on the fire and got the home’s natural gas shut off. People had to be evacuated from neighbouring properties shortly after 5 a.m., as flames kept coming from the second floor of the home.
Firefighters were able to begin checking the structure for hotspots around 5:45 a.m. after venting smoke from the home. A hidden fire was found at the back of the house just after 6 a.m. and put out by 6:30 a.m.Investigators determined the fire started in the basement and was caused by careless disposal of smoking materials. Damage was estimated at $100,000.
