Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to boost Russia's nuclear forces, one day before the country marks the first anniversary of its invasion of Ukraine

In an address to mark the Defender of the Fatherland public holiday, Mr Putin said Russia would increase its mass production of what it calls its nuclear triad – missiles that were based on land, sea and air.

"As before, we will pay increased attention to strengtheningthe nuclear triad," Mr Putin said in remarks issued by the Kremlin early today. The 2010 deal, the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between the two rival nuclear powers, commits them to limiting their stockpile of nuclear warheads.
