Singer Bishop Briggs has undergone great change in the last few years, losing her sister and being pregnant with her first child. She has channeled that into two superb new singles. We spoke about the singles, loss and much more.

Baltin: And what is the"Art of Survival" to you when you go through this?

Baltin: You can only speak for yourself, and maybe it's because you're playing the songs for the first time this weekend at Coachella, and so you're excited and anxious about it to get out there and do them. But don't you think your sister would be proud just that you are going on? Briggs: It is a period of great excitement. I think in terms of pressure, there is a hum of it that is consistent. But thankfully, I think the motive behind the pressure is really based on making sure I want to convey the right message, and in honor of my sister.Briggs: I think writing has been a consistent thing in my world, but I did take time to be present with my sister, for sure. [So] I do have a body of work that feels as though it's coming together.

Baltin: What is it about"High Water" and"Art of Survival" that particularly excites you when you look at Bishop in 2023, 2024? Briggs: Etta James,"I'd Rather Go Blind." And the lyric is,"I'd rather go blind than to see you walk away from me." That directness and pain. And same with Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. One of my favorite songs is"Try a Little Tenderness." What if you change the way you're interacting with the world? What if you're more tender with it? That's at least how I perceive it.

Baltin: Do you find that in the response to the song, that people can identify with it, though you've gone through something that's so personal to you?
