Today is World Leukaemia Day, part of Blood Cancer Awareness Month
Giving Hope for 60 Years: Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI's Legacy in the Fight Against Blood Cancer. As we celebrate 60 years of Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI's tireless work in the fight against blood cancer, we are honoured to share the powerful stories of those who have been directly touched by this disease.
By the late 1980s and 1990s, when Professor McMullin began her practice, chemotherapy had become more intensive. “We were achieving remission in about sixty percent of patients, and some were being cured. This success rate has consistently improved over the past 30 years,” she said. Remarkably, she highlighted the progress in paediatric care, where “the vast majority of children with lymphoblastic leukaemia are now cured,” though challenges remain in treating elderly patients with leukaemia.
In addition to her work with various blood cancers, Professor McMullin has been at the forefront of research and treatment for chronic myeloid leukaemia , a condition characterised by a specific genetic defect in cancer cells. “In 1999, the first patients in the world received an oral treatment for CML, which rapidly became available to all. We now have six licensed tyrosine kinase inhibitors, all of which are oral medications,” she stated.
Alongside this, the charity is calling for those who have experienced Leukaemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma or other blood cancer, and their loved ones, to share their experiences online via the LLNI website’s Share your story
