Tributes are pouring in for Queen Elizabeth II, who has died surrounded by her family in Balmoral.
“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.” The former prime minister Boris Johnson has also released a lengthy statement, in which he described this moment as “our country’s saddest day”.
“This is our country’s saddest day because she had a unique and simple power to make us happy. That is why we loved her. That is why we grieve for Elizabeth the Great, the longest serving and in many ways the finest monarch in our history.” “So, as our great Elizabethean era comes to an end, we will honour the late Queen’s memory by keeping alive the values of public service she embodied. For seventy years, Queen Elizabeth II stood as the head of our country.
