Jones was raised in Midland. His mother worked as a teacher and police officer, while his father was an oil field worker.He attended Robert E. Lee High School in Midland at the same time as former first lady Laura Bush. He later transferred to a Dallas-area high school, St. Mark's School of Texas, where he would graduate in 1965.Jones and Al Gore both attended Harvard in the late '60s and have been close friends since.While at Harvard he was a member of the 1968 undefeated football team.
