THERE WAS a sad familiarity to how the media covered the horrific killings of three people in Nottingham this week.
It is human nature that when tragedy strikes, along with mourning those who have been lost, we immediately try to make sense of what has happened. The moment the first reports came in from Nottingham, social media started talking about terrorism and lamenting how soft the nation had been on ‘certain groups’.Even when it became clear that the man was not motivated by terrorism the story was given a new boost when reports started to come out that the he may have been born in west Africa.
All of this sat well alongside the Mail’s description of ‘the hooded man’ and of the police investigation: “In one raid they battered down the door and questioned two students about a black man who lived there. Bella Crawshaw, 20… was asked by officers if she ‘hung out’ with a black man from the address.
