The latest JNLR figures reveal a surge in radio listenership across Ireland, with popular shows experiencing significant gains. Brendan O'Connor, Miriam O'Callaghan, Oliver Callan, and Marty Whelan are among the top performers, attracting more listeners. RTÉ remains the most popular radio network, while RTÉ Radio 1 dominates with over 1 million weekly listeners.
The latest Joint National Listenership Research results for the period January to December 2024 are out, and a number of top talents have seen growth in their listenership. Brendan O’Connor, Oliver Callan, Miriam O’Callaghan and Marty Whelan have seen huge increases in their listeners, while other shows took a dip.
The numbers show that Ireland's love of radio is as powerful as ever, with more than 3.4 million adults tuning in each and every day. Brendan O'Connor gained more than 40,000 listeners book-on-book across his two weekend shows. Book-on-book is a a comparison of the average listenership across the last four quarters. The JNLRs show that he gained 16,000 listeners on his Saturday show, with the total rising to 358,000, and an extra 27,000 listeners on his Sunday show, which now has 366,000 listeners. Miriam O'Callaghan's Sunday morning weekend radio show gained 4,000 listeners, leading to a total of 304,000 overall.Sinéad Wylde, Head of RTÉ lyric fm, said: "Success of the mornings on Marty in the Morning continues with an additional 15,000 new listeners joining the show over the last year in what is a highly competitive slot. "Marty Whelan shines and starts the day lightly with his good humour setting the tone along with his unique mix of music, fun and chat."2FM is now the most-listened-to radio station in the country among 15-34-year-olds. The 2FM Breakfast Show has gained 10,000 listeners. Laura Fox and Tracy Clifford have seen slight dips, both down 2,000 book-on-book, holding 131,000 and 117,000, respectively. Bláthnaid Treacy is growing in listenership, with 155,000 on Saturdays and 141,000 on Sundays, up 2000 and 4000 respectively. Today with Claire Byrne is up 7,000 book-on-book to 349,000, The Louise Duffy Show is up by 5,000 book-on-book to 228,000, and the News at One is up by 5000 to 307,000 book-on-book.At Newstalk, Pat Kenny now has 237,000 listeners, down 4,000 listeners, while Newstalk Breakfast lost 3,000 listeners.CEO Kevin Branigan said: “We’re very enthused by these latest JNLR ratings. We’ve been working hard on growing Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio and it’s gratifying to see us reach all-time high listenership like this in such a competitive marketplace.” Today FM is Ireland’s top commercial radio station with 953,000 weekly listeners, with The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show in the lead there with 202,000 daily listeners.
