Nothing, as Juliet Capulet would argue. “That which we call a rose,” she famously contended, “by any other name would smell as sweet.” But we should be careful about ascribing wisdom to an impulsive 13-year-old. What does she know? Would we remember Romeo and Juliet if it were called Larry and Denise?
Here at The Athletic, we firmly believe there’s quite a lot in a name. So much so that we decided to rank the top player names across minor-league baseball. More than 60 members of our staff, covering baseball and many other sports, rated a list of minor-leaguer monikers on a scale from 1 to 10 . Only minor-leaguers who played in the United States, either in rookie ball or with a full-season affiliate, were considered.
Without further ado, and in ascending order, here are the players who, by any other name, would not be as memorable.OK, so with some ado. Let’s spare a moment for the men who didn’t make the top 10.
