It was another tough night for Man Utd and in particular for World Cup winning defender Raphael Varane.
The same inevitable questions were asked when the Manchester United line-up dropped last night. 'What has Raphael Varane done wrong?' They were answered by the final whistle.
In fairness, Maguire has been great in recent weeks and has been the club's best centre-back so far this season. Against all the odds, Evans has become the second. Ten Hag is right that United have other options in central defence, the concern is over their own poor performance levels so far this season.
Having dropped down the pecking order in recent weeks, Varane's introduction was the perfect opportunity to prove how good he really is. Instead, all it did was reaffirm why Evans is ahead of him. There has often been a stark contrast between Maguire and Varane's different approaches to defending, which was evident again on Wednesday night as they failed miserably to deal with the Copenhagen onslaught late on.
