The 48-year-old pleaded guilty to 49 charges against 12 women, including 24 counts of rape, nine counts of sexual assault and three counts of false imprisonment
has been handed 36 life sentences after carrying out 80 sex attacks on women over an 18-year period and will serve a minimum of 30 years and 239 days in prison.
She said only a life sentence would “meet the gravity of the offending and the risk that you continue to impose”. “For nearly two decades, you were proved right but now a combination of those 12 women, by coming forward, and your police colleagues, by acting on their evidence, have exposed you and brought you low.”
Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb told him he attempted suicide as a “self-pitying reaction to the shame brought on you by these proceedings rather than remorse”.The sentencing began at 11.40am, over an hour late, due to technical issues with the audio in the overspill court. Continuing her sentencing remarks, the judge told Carrick that he “drilled” into one victim that “you were the police, you were the law and you owned her”.
