Saskatchewan RCMP have had drones for more than a decade but are expanding their availability.
Pugh said the expansion wouldn’t change the way the drones are used, but having the equipment available at a much larger number of detachment areas would allow an efficient and timely response to all kinds of critical incidents.
“There’s no real threshold to utilize the aircraft. I always have equated this program to Air Support. Police services right across Canada and the U.S. have had helicopters and aircraft for decades. We’re utilizing our aircraft in the exact same fashion they are and they have been for years,” Pugh said.Pugh said RCMP reviewed their internal policies within Saskatchewan “F” Division and nationally, and updated their policies to reflect the expansion of the drone program.
“They submitted a Privacy Impact Assessment to our Office about the matter and we have provided them with recommendations. We are awaiting an update to this PIA,” the OIPC of Canada said.
