Exclusive: Correspondence obtained by the Irish Mirror suggests that Ossian Smyth's own office didn't know what happened to unclaimed deposits, three weeks after the scheme was introduced
Micheál Martin and Leo Varadkar were among nine ministers who bombarded their government colleague, Ossian Smyth, with complaints about the Re-turn scheme during its first two months of operation earlier this year.
Two days later, his office had to contact the department again to ask who was responsible for the maintenance of reverse vending machines, noting that it had received conflicting advice from Re-turn and retailers. On February 14, Re-turn suggested to one complainant that they should contact “the organisers of the deposit return scheme”. Perplexed, they forwarded this reply to Minister Smyth, who asked the department “to check in with Re-turn on this response”.
Green Party leader Eamon Ryan referred several complaints to Minister Smyth, including five on the first day of the scheme alone. His deputy leader Catherine Martin was also among the ministers who were in contact in relation to grievances.
