An overstretched system is placing school communities under serious strain
Annual reports of teacher shortages highlight only one part of a wider set of pressures. Recent letters from education experts and the 2026 Principal Occupational Wellbeing Report show a system under strain far beyond staffing.
The Department of Education’s strategy promises an education system that “places children at the centre”, yet an overstretched system is placing school communities under serious strain. Principals and deputy principals now carry responsibilities that, in any other sector, would be spread across specialist teams, while rising special educational needs, crowded timetables, developing curriculums and expanding administrative demands erode the time needed for the planning and collaboration students depend on.
Teachers and SNAs struggle to secure protected time to train and collaborate, while staff shortages frequently pull school leaders back into classrooms. Families who end up in court are unhappy in strikingly similar waysWhy the US’s deteriorating financial health is bad news for Ireland More practical supports – including dedicated administrator posts – would help senior management focus on leadership and teaching. In high‑rent and remote areas, accommodation supports and targeted incentives could also help attract and retain staff.
Despite these pressures, school staff continue to create safe, welcoming environments while meeting the demands of wellbeing, inclusion, mental health, curriculum change and junior and senior cycle exam pressures with extraordinary commitment. To truly place the child at the centre, the Government must now provide the supports that let school staff focus on the work they entered education to do – helping every student thrive.
