The “rear elements” of Russia’s forces heading toward Ukraine's capital of Kyiv have progressed, while their “advanced elements” have not, a senior U.S. defense official said Friday.
The advanced troops are roughly 9 miles from the center of Kyiv, though the Pentagon has observed troops further away from the city make progress, the official said. The Defense Department has tallied more than 800 missile launches since Russia invaded slightly more than two weeks ago.
Russian forces have “isolated” Chernihiv, Ukraine, a city near the Belarusian border roughly 90 miles to the north of Kyiv, and they “are right outside the city,” the official said, noting that the Pentagon does not “assess that they have moved beyond Chernihiv or further down.”Some troops that were heading from the northeast toward the capital are now roughly 15 miles away.
There’s “a lot of fighting still” in Kharkiv, Ukraine, though Russian forces are “closing in on it, if you will, from a geographic perspective,” while Mariupol, a Ukrainian port city along the southern coast of the Sea of Azov, “is under increasing pressure.” The Pentagon assesses that Russia has taken over the city of Kherson, also in the southern part of Ukraine, while acknowledging that a nearby city, Mykolayiv, is also “under increasing pressure” with enemy forces “just outside the city.”The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights reported Friday that at least 564 civilians had been killed, while another 982 had been wounded. Roughly 40 children were among those who were killed. There have been more than 2.
The White House warned Thursday that Russia could be gearing up to launch a chemical weapon attack in Ukraine. They had accused the United States of running biological research facilities, a debunked claim, and China has pushed the conspiracy as well, while U.S. officials warned that it’s common for Russia to levy an accusation only to commit the act themselves shortly thereafter.
