She expressed concern about cuts to these prescriptions in certain areas and urged her supporters to sign a petition initiated by Coeliac UK, which aims to present the petition to Number 10, ensuring that the voices of those affected by coeliac disease are heard. The news resonated deeply with many, particularly in Ireland, where coeliac disease is prevalent, affecting an estimated 100,000 individuals. According to the Health Service Executive (HSE), this common digestive condition arises when the small intestine becomes inflamed, hindering the absorption of nutrients, leading to a range of symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and bloating. Coeliac disease stems from a severe reaction to gluten, a dietary protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, and any food products derived from these grains. Identifying gluten-containing foods is crucial for individuals with coeliac disease, as even trace amounts can trigger adverse reactions. Common gluten-containing foods include bread, pasta, cereals, baked goods, and even some processed foods. Most beers are also produced using barley, making them unsuitable for people with coeliac disease. The ingestion of gluten can manifest in a variety of gut-related symptoms, including diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and nausea. Beyond digestive issues, coeliac disease can also lead to other symptoms such as fatigue, iron-deficiency anaemia, weight loss, joint pain, and even neurological problems. Remarkably, coeliac disease is not simply a food intolerance or allergy but an autoimmune condition. In people with this condition, the immune system mistakenly perceives gluten as a threat, triggering an attack on the small intestine. This autoimmune response damages the intestinal lining, compromising the body's ability to absorb nutrients efficiently. While there is no known cure for coeliac disease, adhering to a strict gluten-free diet is paramount in managing the condition and alleviating symptoms.
