Poway High grad overcomes devastating knee injury to become Toreros' top receiver

The thick scar starts in the middle of Vance Jefferson’s left knee, darts straight south about five inches before closing at a 45-degree angle to the outside of his leg.

At the time of his injury, Jefferson was drawing interest from the likes of UCLA, Washington, Boise State, Virginia Tech and San Diego State. After the injury, recruiters stiff armed him, essentially saying, “Let’s see how you recover your senior season.” In the Toreros’ 58-0 season-opening win over Division III La Verne last Saturday, Jefferson picked up where he left off, catching four passes for 107 yards, including touchdowns covering 59 and 15 yards.

“Running with the ball after the catch, that’s a big thing,” said head coach Dale Lindsey. “Some receivers can’t do it. They catch the ball and get tackled. He catches the ball and looks like a running back.” At 6 feet, 192 pounds, Jefferson is muscular as wide receivers go. He doesn’t think he’s particularly athletic at his position. He says his speed is average and others can jump higher.
