🎧 Listen: In today's episode of The Journal podcast, ZushaElinson explains how a mother tried to get law enforcement to take away her son's firearms before he killed eight people at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis

Sheila Hole: I said, "Sir, you don't have a three day waiting period?" He said, "No, that don't happen anymore." I knew that was a huge mistake. Sheila Hole: And that's what we did. I got him down away from the weapon, out of the room where he was with the weapon in there, and they handcuffed him immediately. And then they retrieved the gun, the shotgun.

Zusha Elinson: We as a society have been facing this scourge of mass shootings and we've been struggling with ways to stop them. And one of the newest ways to stop them are what are called Red Flag laws. So anyone considered a danger to themselves or others, police can seize their guns temporarily. And during that temporary bar, the person would not be able to buy guns at all.

Zusha Elinson: Yeah, it really depends on the place. And what's really interesting to me about the use of Red Flag laws is we did sort of a study of all the states that have them, and if you look at states or cities where there's been a big mass shooting, those police officers, those sheriffs, they are really eager to use Red Flag laws. In places where there has not been a big mass shooting, less so. I mean, it's really like PTSD for these officers.

Zusha Elinson: And this is a little difficult to talk about just because the FBI won't talk about what they did in this case. All we know is that they did look at Brandon.Sheila Hole: The FBI agent told me my son hit every red flag for a mass shooter. Sheila Hole: So we went into the counselor and she's like, "Well, how you doing?" So I'm like, "Yeah, it's not going well." And she goes, "Well Brandon, are you thinking about killing yourself anymore?" And he looks at her and he says, "I have no empathy for anyone. I'm a danger to society. Society should be afraid of me." Those were his exact words. They'll burn in my brain forever. I start bawling. And I said, "He needs help.

Sheila Hole: At approximately 4:00 in the morning, I heard doorbell and knock. So I get up and I come downstairs. And the TV's loud, but that's not where it's coming from. It's from the front door. And I open the door and I see police. So I had to wait for the major crimes detective. An hour or so later, he pulls up. I get in his car and he goes... I said, "He killed himself, didn't he?" And he said it was worse.

Speaker 7: It's completely devastating for us. We never expected something like this to happen. It's really hard.Speaker 9: We lost him. We lost our loved ones. That what matters.
