The UK Sepsis Trust estimates at least 44,000 people die of sepsis each year in the UK
Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening illness that charity leaders say roughly kills five Brits an hour. That's according to the UK Sepsis Trust that estimates at least 44,000 people die of sepsis each year in the UK.
As the MEN reports, sepsis - sometimes called septicaemia or blood poisoning - happens when the immune system overreacts to an infection and starts to damage the body's own tissues and organs. Why does sepsis happen? We simply don’t know but we do know that it starts with an infection – so it could be a chest infection, an insect bite, post-operative infection. However, these are only a few examples, say medical negligence lawyers, Irwin Mitchell.
Around 2,000 children each year develop sepsis in the UK and there are more than 150,000 cases of sepsis in children each year.
