Regional Independents nominate Verona Murphy for ceann comhairle, seeking support of FF and FGHe has met eight of the members of the Regional Group in recent days and said: “It seems to me from my initial engagement that Independents are very serious about wanting to be part of that.”The Regional Group met on Wednesday and agreed to nominate Wexford TD Ms Murphy for the position of ceann comhairle.

The group said Mr Murphy’s nomination has the potential to be “historic” as she would be the first woman to hold the role. The statement added: “Arising from those discussions the Regional Groups will appoint their negotiators.” Speaking to reporters in advance of Cabinet, the Taoiseach, Mr Harris said he had “excellent meetings” this week including with eight members of the Regional Group.
