Reilly Opelka of the U.S. plays a forehand return to Dominik Koepfer of Germany during their second round match at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia, Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022. Late in the second set tiebreaker of Saturday’s semifinal at the ATP Dallas Open, John Isner turned to the crowd and gave a look of bewilderment. He, like the fans in attendance at SMU’s Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex, was in disbelief at what was happening.
The No. 2 seed Opelka pulverized 39 aces in the set, the most he’s ever had in a two-set match in his career. Isner, the third seed and hometown hero, pounded 21 aces and notched a first serve points winning percentage of 89%.Heading into Saturday’s match, Isner and Opelka had gone to a tiebreaker in 10 straight sets over three matches — all wins by Opelka., which makes them hard to break. Tiebreakers were expected, but not for one to last 46 points.
Each player had their fair share of chances to win the set. Isner had 10 set points and Opelka had eight match points. Opelka highlighted Isner’s first set point at 6-5, when he hit a passing shot to keep the set alive, as a key point in the match for him. Isner considers the inflection point his missed opportunity up 9-8 when he was serving. After losing that point, Isner said he was waiting for Opelka “to give it to me,” which ended up costing him.
