It's now been 30 years since it started - and 10 years since it ended

On August 30, 1993, the company behind the annual Beatles Convention held an August Bank Holiday party in Mathew Street. But when the event started as a stage outside the Cavern no one could have known how massive it was to become and the legacy it would leave in the city.

"It was virtually impossible, even for the sober, to count how many people passed up and down a street 200 strides long and two staggers wide in the course of seven hours of unrelenting music making. But organisers Cavern City Tours reckoned that the multitude could be counted in five figure, instead of the four-figure crowd they had anticipated."

These photos, from our archives, Mirrorpix, capture moments from the first Mathew Street Festival 30 years ago. Taken on August 31 that year, you can see everything from crowds to people enjoying the music elsewhere on Chavasse Park. The year 2000 also saw established pop acts like S Club 7, Steps and Five performing at Party at the Pier. For years, Mathew Street Festival didn't only boost the local economy and attract more tourist, but became a loved tradition for many friends and families to attend every year.
