MP Gavin Newlands had a meeting with the Home Office “to discuss the proposed ramp-up of arrivals” at the Muthu Hotel in Erskine.
A Renfrewshire MP has called on the Home Office to “slow the rate” of asylum seekers arriving at an Erskine hotel.
In February, it was confirmed at Renfrewshire Council’s leadership board that the hotel – which was initially to be used for single men – will host a mixed population of families, couples and single people. There is also a dedicated St Mirren section that will follow every kick of the ball with the Buddies.Mr Newlands posted on Facebook: “While I truly believe, that those who are fleeing persecution or violence deserve our help and support, the location of Erskine Bridge Hotel is not a suitable location due to the limited resources and activities in the area.
He concluded his Facebook update, stating: “Please be assured as your Member of Parliament I will do everything in my power to represent your views and will continue to press the Home Office.” But so too has Stand Up to Racism and the Scottish Trades Union Congress who have vowed to host counter demonstrations in their bid to “drive out the poison of fascism from our communities”.
