La Universidad Monte Tamalpais de la Prisión Estatal San Quentin es la primera escuela de estudios superiores en EEUU tras las rejas

Detrás de muros y alambre de púas, y a unos cuantos metros del corredor de la muerte de California, los estudiantes de una de las universidades más singulares del país discuten los atentados del 11 de septiembre de 2001 y temas de moral, identidad y nacionalismo.

Nombrada como una montaña ubicada cerca de la prisión, la universidad fue acreditada en enero luego de que una comisión de 19 miembros de la Asociación de Escuelas y Universidades de Occidente determinara que el programa de extensión basado en San Quentin durante más de dos décadas brindaba educación de alta calidad.

La universidad es una de las decenas de programas educativos, de capacitación laboral y autoayuda disponibles para los 3.100 reclusos en la sección de seguridad media de San Quentin, lo que la convierte en un destino deseado para reclusos en todo el estado que piden ser transferidos ahí. “Hay alegría en el aprendizaje; por eso quiero continuar”, dijo. “Incluso cuando salga, regresaré a la universidad”.
