A major report on how Ireland will tackle greenhouse gases looks set to be agreed tonight in the Oireachtas

A cross-party compromise on carbon tax has been passed by 15 votes to five. It was opposed by Sinn Féin, People Before Profit and Independent TD Thomas Pringle.

The compromise text would see carbon tax increasing to €80 per tonne by the year 2030 - but it can "only be implemented" after impact assessments on those at risk of fuel poverty. While carbon tax has been the most contentious issue, the report is a wide-ranging document covering all aspects of climate action. The outstanding question is whether Sinn Féin, People Before Profit and Mr Pringle will support the final report or oppose it and release a minority report.
