A new poll reveals a significant divide between voters in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland regarding potential NATO and Commonwealth membership for a united Ireland.
Voters in the Republic of Ireland hold significantly different views compared to their counterparts in Northern Ireland regarding a potential united Ireland's membership in NATO and the Commonwealth. A new poll reveals that nearly half of all voters in the Republic (49%) oppose NATO membership for a unified Ireland, while 19% are in favor and 22% remain undecided. Opposition to Commonwealth membership among southern voters is even more pronounced, with 67% against and only 11% in favor.
This stark contrast emerges despite the importance of these organizations to unionists in Northern Ireland.In contrast, Protestant voters in the North overwhelmingly favor membership in both NATO (55%) and the Commonwealth (52%). Northern Catholics, while also opposed to both organizations, express less negativity, particularly towards NATO membership, compared to voters in the Republic. The findings, stemming from the North and South research project, highlight the deep divisions within the island on this crucial issue. Conducted annually over the past three years by Ipsos, the project includes simultaneous opinion polls in both jurisdictions, each surveying over 1,000 voters. Additionally, two deliberative forums, one in each jurisdiction, allow selected participants to engage in structured discussions on constitutional matters and related questions. The 2024 surveys and forums underscore a reluctance among many southern voters to accommodate unionist perspectives in shaping a future united Ireland. Previous research suggests that many southern voters are hesitant to alter symbols, emblems, or make financial or constitutional concessions to accommodate unionists in the event of referendums on both sides of the border.
