The GOP finds a new way to exploit the high prices at gas stations for potential political gain.

A House Democratic counsel reportedly made a case against sending gas cards on Wednesday, warning, among other things, that the idea could worsen inflation and potentially delay people’s tax returns due to strain on the IRS. White House spokespersontold Axios that while there are “a variety of ideas being discussed to ensure that the costs American families are feeling at the pump are as minimal as possible,” sending gas cards to Americans is not being considered “as a serious option.

Among the other ideas Democrats are discussing to counteract high gas prices—something environmental groups Democrats to confront—are “stimulus checks, using more ethanol to lower the demand for oil, and canceling oil companies’ federal leases that aren’t actively being used,” according to Axios.
