NHS officials have abandoned plans to award a £12m rural GP contract to a private firm following a public outcry The battle was highlighted by theipaper earlier this month and seen as a “David v Goliath” moment 🔴 Exclusive from PMGallagher1

Doctors’ Association UK said the row highlighted a much wider trend, which is the presumption that “bigger is better when it comes to primary care”.

She said earlier this month her staff would have refused to work for SSP and described the process as “like a cornershop going up against Tesco”. ICB chief executive Kevin Lavery said he had been “inundated with feedback from the public” over the decision. “The ICB intends to undertake further engagement with patients and the community in Withnell and launch a new procurement process to award the long-term contract for the service. To ensure the continuity of services at Withnell Health Centre the current interim arrangements will be extended by 18 months.”

SSP Health had said it was committed to retaining the team at the health centre and building upon its good reputation, so as to continue to give “the best possible care”.
