'Micah Ariel Watson's choreopoem 'Alaiyo' is a compelling addition to a conversation that Lorraine Hansberry, Langston Hughes and other Black writers have carried on for generations,' writes Emily McClanathan.
In the opening scene of Definition Theatre’s current production, “Alaiyo,” budding young writer Ariel is metaphorically adrift at sea, where she declares that words wash over, around and through her. It’s also an apt description of watching this new work by Micah Ariel Watson, whose fast-faced, poetic language flows from one vibrant image to the next, evoking the rhythms of the ocean that looms large in her protagonist’s search for love and identity.
Enter Kofi , a handsome young man in Ariel’s freshman Black studies class. A Black American whose family hails from Ghana, he quickly catches Ariel’s eye but relegates her to the friend zone. As the two grow close, her feelings for Kofi are increasingly tied to her restless attempts to reconcile her identities as an American and a Black woman.
