Conductor Edo de Waart leads the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in refined Rachmaninoff.

Here, the FWSO was led by Dutch conductor Edo de Waart, in an all-Rachmaninoff program pairing a warhorse concerto with a relatively obscure symphony. Contrary to standard performance practice, the concerto followed the symphony, after intermission.

Conducting while seated on a stool, he took a refined approach to Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony, which worked especially well in soft and lyrical sections. De Waart paid close attention to the score’s nuances, bringing out important details, while effectively balancing the parts. Phrasing had shape and flexibility.

There was fine playing from around the orchestra. The violins produced massive walls of sound, and explored a wide range of tonal colors, from silvery highs to earthy lows. The winds, meanwhile, eloquently shaped solos, showcasing their dulcet tones, and the brass moved between soft and rough sounds. The percussion crashed and banged in climaxes, elsewhere offering tasteful understatements.
